Estes Memorial Grant

The Richard Estes Memorial Grant was established to enhance graduate student research by providing a cash prize of $1,200 USD awarded at the annual meeting of the SVP. The award is directed toward research in nonmammalian vertebrate paleontology, with emphasis on systematics, morphology, biogeography and paleoecology. Learn more about Dr. Estes.


Submission Guidelines

Use the electronic online submission system for the Estes Memorial Grant and most other SVP awards. See "What to Submit" for the link.

Do NOT e-mail, fax or mail nomination materials to the committee chair. Any materials sent by e-mail, fax or mail will NOT be reviewed.

Current membership in the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology is required to apply for the Estes Memorial Grant.

Applicant must be a graduate student at the time of application.


What to Submit

Information to be submitted online:

1. A description of the project (three pages, single-spaced maximum), sufficiently detailed, to be evaluated by the Estes Memorial Grant Committee. You will be asked to state:
-
the hypotheses you aim to test
- the broader relevance to vertebrate paleontology
- a brief outline of the timetable and logistics of your proposed project
NOTE: Project descriptions that ignore limits on length will be rejected before review.

2. A budget showing clearly the amounts and purposes for which the award will be used.

3. A letter of support from your project advisor or major professor. This letter needs to state the likely completion date of your graduate research work to ensure that you are eligible for the award. Each letter must bear the full contact information of the person providing the letter (name, institution, phone and e-mail address).
