Predoctoral Fellowship Grant
This fellowship is intended to promote a professional career in vertebrate paleontology by allowing the recipient greater freedom to pursue research during the final stages of the doctoral program.
Submission Guidelines
Use the electronic online submission system for the Predoctoral Fellowship Grant and most other SVP awards. See "What to Submit" for the link.
Do NOT e-mail, fax or mail nomination materials to the committee chair. Any materials sent by E-mail, fax or mail will NOT be reviewed.
Current membership in the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology is required to apply for the Predoctoral Fellowship Grant.
Students may apply only once for the Predoctoral Fellowship Grant, typically within 18 months of the completion of their PhD program.
What to Submit
Information to be submitted online:
Information manually entered into the online submission system:
- Thesis or dissertation research title
- Biographical/CV information: general information (institution, address, educational background) and up to three (3) of the most relevant of the following: honors/awards received, professional societies in which membership is currently held, published works (journal articles, chapters of books, thesis), published abstracts and conferences attended with titles of presentations given.
- Budget information: a description/breakdown of how the Predoctoral Fellowship Grant monies would be used.
Information uploaded as PDFs to the online submission system:
- Abstract of dissertation (300 word maximum)
- Description of project (five pages, single-spaced maximum)
- Literature cited
- Three (3) letters of support. Each letter must bear the full contact information of the person providing the letter (name, institution, phone and e-mail address).
The successful applicant will be chosen on the basis of:
- Scholarly contributions to the field of vertebrate paleontology, including the dissertation project
- Professional activity within the field of vertebrate paleontology
- Promise of a productive and important professional role in vertebrate paleontology

Prize
The total prize money available for the Predoctoral Fellowship Grant prize for 2010 is $3,000 USD. The Predoctoral Fellowship Grant can either be awarded to one individual in its entirety or divided equally between two individuals.
